Job Outlook for Basic Electronics Field

Electronics technicians are expected to see slower than normal job growth over the next few years. The United States Department of Labor Statistics is expecting that electronic technicians and repair people will see job growth of around five percent through 2018. The slower job growth will partly be due to more reliable electronic equipment as sensors and regulators on equipment and maintenance help to keep equipment running longer and with fewer breakdowns.  There may be some demand in this field due to increasing need for skilled electronics laborers in green industries as more businesses and individuals try to utilize greener energy methods for businesses and homes.

Salary Expectations in Basic Electronics

Employers are looking to hire electronics technicians with as much education as possible. Most entry-level jobs require at least a college certificate or diploma, an associate's degree is even better. The more education electronics technicians have, generally the better pay they can expect to receive. According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, in 2008, the middle 50 percent of electronics technicians had average hourly wages from $18.00 to $28.00 per hour. Electronic technicians who worked repairing motorized vehicles or power tools had lower hourly salaries.

Colleges Offering Excellent Basic Electronic Courses Right Now

Colleges are offering some great basic electronics courses right now. Employers are looking for electronic technicians with college training. Community colleges and vocational training centers are offering associate's degree (2 year college degrees) and college certification or diploma programs in basic electronics right now. Some colleges are even putting classes in these programs online. So, students can take the classes over the internet.
