The career field of esthetician is expected to grow at a healthy pace over the next several years. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that this field will increase by about 20 percent between now and the year 2018. This is a much higher rate than most other career fields in the United States. A lot of this growth will be due to an increasing and aging population. As baby boomers need more assistance with their personal appearance and overall health, they will turn to those in field like that of esthetician for assistance with their personal health and appearance. Also, more and more of the populace is going to look to high end salons and day spas for relaxation and overall health improvement.
Earning Potential as an Esthetician
Those with a degree and training in the field of esthetician have excellent potential to earn a better salary in the field of cosmetology then others with no training. The median hourly salary for someone in the esthetician field in 2008 was almost $14.00 per hour, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Those employed at high end salons with regular clients and higher commission bases earned higher average wages.
Training Programs for Estheticians
Due to the high job growth in this career field, many colleges and universities are now offering excellent programs in this field. Schools are now offering certification programs, associate’s degrees, and even bachelor’s degrees in this field. Some schools are even offering certain courses in their esthetician programs online. So, students can take some courses online. However, keep in mind that this is a very hands-on program and many courses must be completed with a trained instructor in a classroom environment.
