Teaching English as a second language (ESL) is a career path with a wide variety of options for travel, employment, and high pay. You can begin teaching ESL in another country with as little as a TESOL certificate or a TEFL certificate. You can also teach ESL in America with such a certificate or with a masters degree in ESL.
Teachers of ESL can work in a variety of school settings across the globe. People in a wide variety of countries want to improve their English language skills. For that reason, ESL teachers are often in high demand. To work as an ESL teacher, you typically need to hold a bachelors degree and also be certified in ESL. The most common ESL certificates are the TESOL, the teaching English to speakers of other languages certificate, and the TEFL, the teaching English as a foreign language certificate. In many countries these certificates are enough to begin working as an ESL teacher. Programs to complete each certificate take anywhere from four weeks to a year depending upon the level of certificate you choose to earn.
