Green Programs and Careers
More colleges are offering degrees with sustainability and renewal able ideas as part of the coursework. It's what college students of today are looking for. According to a USA Today article, over 100 majors, minors, and certification programs have been added in 2009 in the green field of energy and sustainability. Students want to be involved in the green movement, and employers want people that understand sustainability and environmentally business practices. It's a perfect mix. Education is meeting the market need. Many schools are offering programs specializing in green engineering, renewable energy and even green business.
What exactly is a Green Job?
Since, this field is changing and adding new careers every day, these are just a few of the major categories that fit into the new green career movement. Green architecture and building includes designing buildings that are energy efficient and utilize sustainable resources. Energy auditing requires only a certification. Energy auditors audit buildings and structure to be sure they are energy efficient. Green engineers utilize their knowledge and engineering skills to fix problems in renewable and sustainable ways. They may also work to develop new greener technologies and ways of doing things. Solar energy installers install photovoltaic systems. This means installing solar panels and energy systems.
Soaring Job Need for Green Graduates
The need for graduates to be educated in this field is huge. Between now and 2016, there will be a 52 percent increase in growth for jobs in the field of energy and environmentally friendly careers, according to the Obama Administration. Some renewable and sustainability careers, like renewable energy, could see up to 6.3 million new jobs created in the United States by the year 2030. Those with jobs in this field will be diverse everything from earth sciences, solar energy, wind energy, to environmentally friendly business marketing practices. We are changing from the blue collar work force to the green collar work force.
Our government is also working hard to help fund and drive the green movement. In early 2010, the White House created the Recovery Act Advanced Energy Manufacturing Tax Credits Programs with over $2.3 billion in funding. This program has been awarded to companies for clean energy manufacturing projects and is predicted to create over 17,000 new jobs in the renewable and clean energy marketplace.
Great Potential Salaries for the Green Collar Work Force
Those with training in environmentally friendly and sustainable industries have potential earn excellent salaries. A recent survey by CleanTech in Oregon found that the average salary for solar energy installers was $40,000. For, wind turbine technicians, the entry-level salary were about $52,600. For those with an LEED certification as green architects, the mid-level salary was around $58,000 annually. Smart-grid electrical design engineers had an annual salary over $87,000. Also, business analysts in green industries made on average 13 percent more than their counterparts; not employed in the green sector. There's a great future in the green. Come and get your green education started.
