Communications Careers and Programs
More than Talking Heads
Is this the field for neighborhood gossips and television talk show hosts? Well, maybe...but that is not the main idea. The point is the transmission of information. Whether it’s writing, speaking, or some form of media, the field of Communications is all about getting your idea to another human’s brain.
Delivery methods are many, so career options are numerous. Few jobs avoid communications studies completely. A few specialize in this info transfer. Depending on your desire to work with the public, with a business, in the print media, or behind a microphone, Communications offers different ways to make a living. It’s all sharing thoughts in some way, but you can add your own twist as personality shapes your specialty.
How Do You Communicate?
Whatever your strengths are, you must have a few vital ones to make it here. Verbal and written communication skills are obviously key. If you’re athletic - great. If you can’t clearly explain your training regimen to someone, stick with sports, not Communications. This is also not the area for a loner to pursue. If you’re going to specialize in communicating, it’s going to be with other people. Be ready to work with others.
What else do you need? Education, skills and, sometimes, the right connections. A college degree in Communications or a related subject is your basic necessity. Add to that some raw talent. Top it off with knowing an editor, or politician, or CEO, and you have the inside track for a writing or PR position.
Ok, I’m ready
You have the skills. You have the desire. Is there anything out there for you? Yes. The projected growth for communications jobs is 11.7% over the next ten years. Apparently, this idea of sharing information is not a fad. We expect to keep communicating in the future. Maintaining public images, broadcasting news, running businesses – all will continue to involve communicators. The Career Outlook section further breaks down this projected growth.
Salaries are not bad either. The current average income for communications jobs is $57,000. This number will expectedly vary by area of communications and by experience. The chart provides a general overview of the field. See the Salary Forecast section for more details.
Listed below are online Communications colleges and online Communications universities complete with the programs offered.
Use the following if you are interested in help with locating a college or university with an online degree in Communications.
Outlook for Communications Careers
A Lot to Share
New forms of media communications continue to develop. Businesses, politicians, and marketing companies still want to make themselves look good and need communicators to do that for them. People have not curbed their desire to hear the latest news and read the latest stories. Someone needs to tell them.
This translates to opportunities for those seeking careers in communications. Not all areas will offer the same growth, however. As media and business changes, so will jobs. Choose carefully as you decide your method of transmitting information. As an overall field, the growth looks good, but some areas of communication will definitely offer more prospects than others.
Which field offers the best outlook? See the graph for a projected growth of some possible specialties.
There will also be differing opportunities depending on location. Consider your specific passion as you perform your job and home search. Corporate communications specialists are not often needed in rural America. The more newspapers produced in an area, the more writers usually needed. But, Chicagoland will present more competition than a mid-sized metropolis. Weigh things carefully.
The chart under Salary Forecast provides a look at how salaries differ across the nation.
Salaries in Communications
Communicating Cash
Just how much can one expect to bank by building a career in communicating? That partly depends on how good you are at getting your message across. It also depends on your chosen mode of communication. Corporations doing well may pay you generously if you help them do even better. A high-ranking public official may be willing to invest a lot in their public relations, especially in an election year. On the other hand, reporters scooping small-time stories won’t be living in a Beverly Hills estate.
Salaries typically range from modest to middle class. The Overview section provides a sampling of expected salaries. These will vary by location. The chart below offers a sampling of what to expect in different regions of the country. Where you want to live may determine what you want to do as much as how you like to practice communications.
Longevity also pays off better in some careers than others. PR and HR both start around $37,000 and increase to around $44,000 after five years. Technical writing, however, moves from $41,000 starting to $55,000 after five years on the job.
This will need to be weighed with the stability offered by each specialty, as well as the number of opportunities available in each. See the sub-areas of study for more information on an area of interest.
Education Requirements for Careers in Communications
Proof Not Only On Paper
You will need a degree to prove you know how to communicate. The field of Communications is filled with professionals holding degrees at all levels. A majority, though, will be bachelor’s degrees. Unlike some career fields, this one is less demanding of furthering your education beyond the four-year degree. A master’s degree may impress some employers, but, generally, experience is going to outweigh additional education.
Because of this, the practice one gets in the field during those educational years is important. Internships, part-time jobs, media exposure, contacts – these will be key factors in job placement. The more dazzling entries you can include on your resume in the experience field, the better. As much, if not more so, as the education section, these will be what creates opportunities.
Basically, employers want to be reassured you know your stuff. In Communications, this happens through training and experience in the field as much as in the classroom. Running a successful advertising or political campaign will go further in proving your worth as an employee than a second degree.
Just where can this combination of degree and experience get you? Take a look at the paths of some names you may recognize.
