The school partnered with the company ed2go to offer a new certificate in integrative health. Officials told the news source that continuing nursing students who choose to complete this track will participate in courses that integrate holistic stress management, health and the human spirit, energy healing, elements of meditation, healing environments, music therapy as well as nutrition into their previous healthcare education.

Officials added that the 67-contact hour program will incorporate 12 lessons, and is designed for healthcare professionals and consumers. New sessions of each course start each month, the first of which begins January 19.

The online courses incorporate comprehensive lessons, quizzes and assignments with an instructor who is on hand to answer questions, give feedback, pace the class and start discussions.

According to the 2010 Sloan Survey of Online Learning, nearly 30 percent of all college and university students across the U.S. participate in at least one web-based course.

Because if you take that time to make yourself feel better, you might actually study better.

Want an excuse to go get a massage, turn off your computer and go hang out with family? Well, you’ve got one. I’m giving you full dispensation to slow down, turn off and tune out. The reason? Post-semester stress syndrome (PSSS).

Granted, there is no acronym for the syndrome; I made that part up. But there really is truth to the fact that when you finish a school semester, you have a period where your stress can go sky high. And you’ve got to do something to reduce that stress — especially before another semester gets started.

So what causes this stress? The obvious reasons are: exams, end-of-the-year papers and other big finals that combine with the holidays and family. Students are thinking about how they’ll get all of this done within a relatively short period of time, and that can give anyone gray hair. Stress also negatively affects your ability to perform at your best. That results in a self-fulling circle of sorts…you worry about your grades, you cannot study and then your grades truly do plummet.

What can be done about it? The best cure may be to take care of yourself. Go exercise, even if you don’t think you have time to fit in that half hour of stair-stepping. Eat well, even if you think gulping down a Big Mac might be all you can handle at the moment. Turn off your phone, television and Facebook page for a few hours. Drop in on a friend or sit around the Christmas tree with family — even if you think you should be studying for just one more hour. Because if you take that time to make yourself feel better, you might actually study better.

Here’s my personal example. I have a deadline this week for a story about Mompreneurs. Great subject, right? It’s about stay-at-home moms who are working both in and out of the home to make ends meet and keep their own sanity intact. I tried and tried to get myself to work on the story last night, but I was struggling. The pressure kept mounting as I stared at a blank screen.

What did I do? I turned off my computer. I popped on the TV, found a mindless home-renovation show (my personal favorite) and opened a can of salty potato chips. I ate half the can (don’t tell anyone) and sat back in complete silence. When the half-hour show was done, I was ready to write. Really. I wanted to for once. And I got more done in that next hour than I had all day. I went to bed happy and satisfied.

Give yourself a break if you can. It might make all the difference in the world.

Are you feeling like you are on the verge of burnout? Maybe you are already experiencing burnout from the stresses of life. Fortunately, there are three ways you can eliminate or prevent burnout completely and that is the three R’s.

Okay, you may be thinking to yourself what in the world is the three R’s? Yeah, I thought this too. I actually was trying to analyze it. Well, we all know what R&R is and that is rest and relaxation right? Well, unfortunately us busy moms do not always get to enjoy R&R which may be why we are on the road to burnout right? Here is what I learned about the three R’s. Take notes, this may help you deal with burnout or how to avoid it.

The Three R’s According to Help Guide

Recognize- It is important to look for signs of burnout, this can help you determine what you need to do as far as seeking help.

Reverse- If you are indeed experiencing burnout it can be reversed by managing your stress and seeking support.

Resilience- If we experience burnout, our physical and mental health can worsen so it is important to build that resilience to stress by taking care of our bodies. This includes a healthy diet, proper amounts of sleep, and physical exercise.

This all makes sense doesn’t it but it is obviously so much easier said then done at times. I know that this time of year is notorious for causing people to get burnout, especially moms. I definitely plan on using the three R’s to help me keep my focus and not get burnout.

I think it would be an excellent idea as moms to write the three R’s on a post-it or 3X5 card and put it on our mirror or in our planner, etc. as a reminder to us that we need to stay focused and healthy to avoid burnout. I think this is an excellent approach and one that should be adopted not just by moms alike but by college students, business men, etc.

Will you consider using the three R’s approach? Maybe you have tried something different that has helped you? Please share with us your tips on how to avoid burnout.
