The Berlin Wall came down and it changed the lives of citizens and the world. But remembering the fall of the Berlin Wall now has Chinese citizens scrutinizing the Great Firewall of China. This wall serves as a filtering and surveillance program run by the communist government.

Chinese have faced problems in the past. Facebook was shut down during riots in Xinjiang in July and Twitter is also facing problems along with the fact that iPhones aren't allowed to have their key feature: WiFi. Because of government restrictions the iPhone lacks WiFi and that handicaps the sophisticated phone.

For decades Chinese have had limited access to the news and the outside world. The state keeps a tight lip on events that are happening throughout the country and the world. The Chinese government is also trying to put into place the Green Dam which is a censoring software that blocks popular social media pages.

This whole debacle started when Culture Project Berlin created an online "Berlin Twitter Wall" where German tweeters were asked to share their memories of the fall of the wall 20 years ago and "which walls still need to come down for the world to be a better place?" There was a global response and it involved thousands of comments from China complaining about the Great Firewall.

Chinese citizens found a way around the government firewall blocking Twitter and were able to use proxy servers which made the site into an online protest against censorship. It took Chinese censors two days to finally block the website. Before that time there were between 1,500 and 3,300 comments posted on the page.

Before being blocked, one Chinese Twitterer quoted part of President Reagan's speech to Russian leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987 "Tear down this wall." In the past twenty years the internet has become the way people worldwide communicate. But it has also widened the gap between the young Chinese and their government.

Since the Berlin Wall, China internalized the collapse of the Wall and communism in Eastern Europe. Along with Tiananmen Square protests the same year. In the last 20 years the government has opened slightly and given more personal freedom. Since then calls for greater democratization have quieted.

However, today's youth are generally more focused on improving their social and financial conditions rather than government restrictions. And the government is now trying to tighten security in the country's internet network. This is a harsh reality for Chinese considering internet access was shut off for months following this summers riots.

But the outrage over Twitter, Facebook, and the proposed Green Dam censoring program is taking Chinas censorship to a new level and Chinese youth are being affected. Officials believe this was an incident that will blow, but China might be forced to make some concessions when it comes to censorship.

So, the ‘recession-proof’ label has become sickeningly overused. A year ago, Yahoo HotJobs! published an article featuring outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. They named Education, Energy, Healthcare, International Business, Environmental Sector, and Security as recession-proof careers. So how recession-proof were these careers?

Check out the list below and see which ones are actually doing as well as predicted:

1. Education With dozens of states in dire financial straits, education budgets are getting slashed and burned faster than the rainforest. As if public schoolteachers weren’t already getting ripped off on their salaries…

2. Energy The folks in this industry must have freaked last summer when people started seriously limiting their gas usage. Lucky for them, the price of gas plummeted and got everyone back to the good ol’ American tradition of burning petroleum like there’s no tomorrow. Keep in mind, however, that with a recession gnawing away at pocketbooks, Americans will cut back significantly on gasoline usage this year- guaranteed.

3. Health Care While doctors and hospitals have seen a drop in non-urgent health care, this industry is holding relatively strong. People still need emergency care, and life-threatening injuries and diseases have not taken a holiday.

4. International Business What a lot of people didn’t realize last year is how quickly a financial crisis in the U.S. would spread to the rest of the world in a serious way. They thought that American businesses would simply migrate to more plentiful hunting grounds overseas. Well, a year later, everybody is pulling back, from Beijing to New Delhi to New York to Paris. This year, the grass is not greener on the other side… on any side, for that matter.

5. Environmental Sector In the grand scheme of things, in the history of business and commerce, let’s face it: the green movement is just a fad. When corporations are trying to figure out how to just stay alive for the next three years, the last thing on their minds is going to be buying chairs made of recycled bamboo shoots just because their existing furniture is non-biodegradable. The only hope for this industry is to create green solutions that also dramatically help cut costs. With any given corporation, it’s Company first, Earth second.

6. Security They said, "No matter what happens to the economy, the public has to be protected." Police careers are stable, they said. I say, NOT ANYMORE, for the same reason education is no longer safe. Our states are bankrupt and are looking for every way they can to trim down costs. As long as our state governments are neck-deep in debt, don’t count on them paying for one police officer after another. They are already having to say, "We just can’t afford any more."

So, look at the results: 2 out of 6 of their so-called "recession-proof" jobs actually were. One of those is at risk. That’s a 33 percent batting average at best. Not good odds. Funny thing? I haven’t been able to find any "recession-proof" job lists for 2009.

There are plenty to choose from, and each guarantees you won’t be let down. Sure, it is a pain to have to someone steal your identity, and you may never fully recover, but at the same time as long as you check your credit every year you really can’t have anything terrible happen. However, if something does happen, there are lawyers who can help you get your credit and good name back. They are identity theft lawyers, and they will help you even if you don’t have a protection plan.

There have been plenty of case studies recently for people interested in fraud. One example is Bernie Madoff. He didn’t necessarily steal anyone’s identity, but he did trick and lie to people, and those victims can take action. They just have to call an attorney like an identity theft attorney. People who commit fraud should be held responsible.
