Officials from Touro University Worldwide (TUW), which is located in California, recently announced the launch of a new online degree program in marriage and family therapy. They added that students can also enroll in specialty courses such as pastoral counseling, coaching, mediation and dispute resolution.
This degree program is designed for individuals who want to enter the psychotherapy field. Classes begin in January 2011 and will include the new requirement set forth by the National Board for Certified Counselors, which is assures college counseling programs. Students who complete this course of study can earn degrees in mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy as well as licensed professional counseling.
"Students interested in marriage family therapy, licensed professional counseling and mental health counseling can now take TUW's program online and be prepared to practice in areas of their specialization by completing the online course work and face-to-face internship requirements," said Michael Hamlin, chair of the school's professional psychology department.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, mental health counseling is among the fastest growing fields in the country. Employment opportunities in this industry are expected to increase by 24 percent over the next eight years.
