Penn State’s new online master of engineering management program will equip experienced engineers with the business and technical skills they need to be effective managers of complex engineering projects.

“Engineering students generally do not learn about business in undergraduate programs,” said James A. Nemes, division head and professor of mechanical engineering at Penn State Great Valley School of Graduate Professional Studies. “Engineers can pick up some business skills through their work experiences, but if they want to advance their career into engineering management, they will need a graduate degree.”

Penn State Great Valley’s Engineering Division is partnering with Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Business Administration and School of Science, Engineering and Technology to offer the program, which is being delivered online through Penn State’s World Campus. The 33-credit program is designed for working engineers and can be completed in two years. Students will progress together through the 12 courses, which run in continuous five- or seven-week terms.

Stephen Schappe, director of the School of Business Administration at Penn State Harrisburg, said, “There is a growing need in corporate America for interdisciplinary programs like this online engineering management degree. Our courses integrate both engineering and management issues. Engineers, like all good managers, need to learn foundational knowledge about management and critical thinking skills to be successful.”

Penn State Harrisburg’s School of Business Administration faculty members will conduct three courses focusing on the topics of negotiation, communication, teamwork, management, organization, problem solving and organizational learning.

Penn State Great Valley is offering the program online to reach more engineers who want to become managers. As Nemes pointed out, “The vast majority of engineers who want a graduate degree are already working and have families and other responsibilities. They need the flexibility an online degree offers.”

Penn State’s engineering programs are consistently ranked high among leading U.S. engineering programs by U.S. News & World Report.

The Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) is a multicampus state-related, land-grant, space-grant public research university with campuses and facilities throughout Pennsylvania in the United States.

Penn State was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1855 and has a threefold mission of teaching, research and public service. Its instructional mission includes undergraduate, graduate, professional and continuing education offered through resident instruction and online delivery. Its University Park campus, the largest of 24 campuses across the state, lies within the Borough of State College and College Township, Pennsylvania. The university is currently home to over 80,000 students and offers more than 160 majors.

The Penn State Blue Band is recognized as one of the nation’s finest college marching bands and performs to capacity crowds in 107,232 seat Beaver Stadium, home of Penn State Nittany Lion football. The Blue Band has performed at every major bowl game in the U.S., including the Rose Bowl and the Tournament of Roses Parade. The 2010–2011 season is the 111th year of the Blue Band’s proud, tradition-filled history. The Blue Band was the recipient of the 2005 Sudler Trophy, the most prestigious award a collegiate marching band can receive.

College officials said that the program will focus on training a new generation of leaders by combining cutting-edge management and leadership theories with practical application to the working environment.

The program is tailored to working professionals who are seeking to advance into organizational leadership roles and to upgrade their skills in management, planning, design, evaluation, research and policy development. Furthermore, officials said that individuals can complete the curriculum without interrupting their careers.

The accelerated program offers a broad spectrum of courses that are intended to meet the individual needs of the students as well as develop a diverse community of learners. College officials noted that the curriculum is designed for older, more experienced adults who can draw from their work experience to add to discussions.

According to a 2009 report from the Sloan Consortium, approximately 4.6 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2008 semester.

Many couples meet at work and then choose to get married. However, one member of the couple will usually quit and start a new job somewhere else so they don't have to be together 24/7. Having time apart and working on different projects is generally the approach most couples take because it's too stressful to live with someone and work with them.

Almost half of marriages end in divorce so why take the risk of working with your spouse? If things go sour it will not only affect your personal life but also your career and financial state as well. Just look at Frank and Jamie McCourt the estranged couple that ran the Los Angeles Dodgers. The owner is Frank McCourt and his wife ran the team but last month the husband fired his wife. She went to court and tried to sue to get her job back but lost.

This is just one example of the problems a couple may face while sharing a house and the office. Working with one another can be extremely stressful. Additional stress is being added along with the struggles of a normal relationship because you're also involving finances and your career. Another couple that worked together has been divorced and remarried.

They have faced many negative experiences. They have had supervisors that tried to pit them against each other, along with lots of bad rumors spread about them, and accusations of favoritism. They even have arguments about friends at work because one spouse doesn't like some of the friends of the husband or vice versa.

Even though there are lots of challenges, the couple has learned to work together but still struggles with day to day issues at work and home. Another problem is that it's dangerous to have both spouses working for the same company. With this rocky economy a company may face difficulty and be forced to layoff workers. If that happens, one or both of you might be out of a job.

Although a lot of marriages have ended in divorce when spouses worked together, many have thrived. One couple listed the secret to successfully working together as each having responsibility over different things. A power struggle is the last thing you want so one partner shouldn't be in a managerial position over the other.

By having individual projects and responsibilities they can still work together and love each other. Another secret is to leave work at the office. It can be easy to talk about work out of the office but you have to keep the relationship going and the romance alive so forget about work.

The moral of the story is working together can be difficult on your relationship and may put so much strain you may end it. However, many couples successfully work together. You will never know if you can work with your spouse until you try it. But if you have a stable job that you enjoy quit yet. If you go to work together and it fails you may have a difficult time finding another job, so it will affect your finances and your relationship.
