One of my staple recipes is whole wheat pasta with vegetable alfredo sauce. So simple, yet so delicious. I cook the pasta and put it to the side. Then, I dice up some green and golden bell peppers, onions, spinach, tomatoes and whatever else I have lying around that I think will be good in the alfredo sauce. I put the vegetables in a pan with olive oil and sauté them until tender.

While they are cooking, I simmer the alfredo sauce, stirring occasionally until it is warm. I add extra parmesan and feta, and some black pepper and parsley if I have it. I add the vegetables and stir it up, then put it on the pasta! Yum! Cooking using your own recipes is so much fun, and can be healthy at the same time! My favorite thing to do is ask my friends and family for their favorite recipes, then I add some of my own ingredients to put a personal touch on them.

Cooking at home is one of the best ways to save money, bring your family (or a group of friends) together, and live a healthier lifestyle. The first way to start cooking is to begin gathering recipes. Having a small but varied group of recipes will ensure that you don’t get bored with daily dinner but also aren’t overwhelmed by choices. You can quickly build a great recipe collection by asking friends, family members and neighbors to share their favorite recipes with you. Write the recipes down on 3×5 cards and store them in a card box in the kitchen. Then, start cooking!

Choose recipes that are healthy and delicious. As you cook, try variations on the recipes and make sure to write down what works! If you find yourself running out of time at the end of the day, prepare dinner in crock pots and casseroles that can cook throughout the day or be heated up while you change out of your work clothes. Also, divide cooking duties up among family members. If everyone participate, cooking is sure to be a fun and fulfilling family activity!
