As part of this trend, schools are reporting that record numbers of people are attending nontraditional classes nationwide.

Spartanburg Community College in South Carolina, has announced that enrollment in the school has grown by 22 percent since 2008, reports Go Upstate.

College officials attribute the increase in enrollment to how convenient, affordable and transferable educational opportunities are to state residents. Furthermore, the addition of online programs has allowed the school to cater to more students from outside the area. The school has also attracted younger enrollees, as administrators report that the average undergraduate age is now 26, as compared to 28 during the 2008 academic year.

“The national recession has driven younger students to community colleges because our tuition is more affordable than that of four-year colleges and universities,” Para M. Jones, president of the school told the news source.

They added that the college offers more than 100 web-based courses as well as complete online degrees and certification programs.

The Pew Research Center reports that community colleges enroll nearly 44 percent of all U.S. undergraduates.
