Tailgating Recipes for a Great Game

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Football season is finally back in full swing. Whether you’re cheering for a team you’ve followed your entire life, rooting for your alma mater, or just enjoying time with friends, it’s never a true tailgating party without great food. Here are couple of ideas for delicious, super simple snacks to help you enjoy game day!

Chicken Wing Dip

Ingredients:
-  2 (10 ounce) cans chunk chicken, drained
- 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
- 1 cup ranch or bleu cheese dressing (I like bleu cheese)
- 3/4 cup buffalo sauce (my favorite is Franks Red Hot)
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- Tortilla chips, vegetables, etc

Directions:
Heat chicken and hot sauce in a skillet over medium heat, until heated through. Stir in cream cheese and ranch dressing. Cook, stirring until well blended and warm. Mix in half of the shredded cheese, and transfer the mixture to a slow cooker. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over the top, cover, and cook on Low setting until hot and bubbly. Serve with tortilla chips, vegetables or anything else you can think of.

Weird College Sports You’ve Never Heard Of

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Sure we’ve all watched our fair share of football, hockey, baseball, and basketball games, but have you ever seen a game of octopush? How about elephant polo? These games are not what we’d call mainstream, although I bet they’d be pretty entertaining to see. OSQ has an annual dodgeball tournament. If you thought that was strange, read on…

Octopush is essentially underwater hockey. The game consists of people pushing each other around to get to the plastic covered 1.5 kilogram puck (definitely doesn’t float), hence the name. Players carry a black or white (depending on which team they are on) short stick which may not be longer than 350mm. They wear gloves and mouth guards like in hockey, but also wear snorkels and swimming caps. The game starts with all eight players on each team lined up at opposite ends of the pool. The puck is placed in the center of the pool, a whistle is blown and players race to gain possession. Players may go anywhere in the pool, there are no off-sides rules like in regular hockey. Play continues until either the referee calls some kind of penalty or a goal is scored. The goals are three meters wide at opposite sides of the pool. Octopush was started by divers in 1954, in England. The game came to North America in 1962 and is now played worldwide.

Elephant Polo is played all over the world. The winner of the World Elephant Polo Championship in December of 2007 was the Chopard Hong Kong team. It is exactly what it sounds like polo, polo played while riding elephants. Each elephant has two riders. One rider is the elephant’s master, and controls him. The other rider is the polo player. The field is three quarters of the length of a normal polo field because elephants are inherently slower than horses. Like polo as we know it, there are three players on each team. There are many rules to protect the elephants and minimize the risk of them getting hurt. The stick used to hit the ball is similar to a regular polo mallet, except it is between six and nine feet long. There are rules that prohibit elephants from lying down in front of the goal or picking the ball up with their trunks. Even the referees ride elephants during the game. The game consists of two seven-minute chukkas with fifteen minutes of rest between them. The team with the most goals wins.

Why Online Education is Better for the Environment…And Your Wallet

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

Are you concerned about the environment? How about your wallet? Taking classes online may be just the solution.

The classes themselves may not be any less expensive than actually going to college, but there are tons of other ways that you’ll save money.

1.) We have everything we need virtually, including an education. When you take classes online, there’s no need to handouts or taking notes in a notebook. The amount of paper one goes through in a semester of college is unbelievable; as well as unnecessary. Many companies are now going “paperless” in an effort to curb their waste produced. All their files are electronic. So, not only are you saving paper, and helping the environment, you will also be preparing for your career while at college. Get comfortable going to college “paperless” and you’ll make the transition to your job effortlessly.

2.) You don’t have to live anywhere in particular. I paid over $2000/semester when I lived on campus. Two grand for a tiny little dorm room, half the size of a normal bedroom; and shared it with a roommate. You can take classes online from anywhere. Live at home, share a house with friends, or travel the world. As long as you have access to the internet, you can be “in class.”

3.) You may be thinking, I can live at home and commute to school. You’re right, you can, but then you’re wasting gas and paying for it. Who knows when gas prices are going to stop rising? With online classes you don’t have to go anywhere. It’s better for the environment, and you’re saving money.

4.) Time is money- online classes are time flexible; you can take them whenever you want. Study and “go to class” a little every day, or sit down a few weekends and do a semester’s worth of work, it doesn’t matter. So, it’s easy and convenient to get an online degree and still work full time, travel, or whatever else your little heart desires. Not needing to leave the house means you don’t have to worry about what you look like. You don’t have to waste time “getting ready” No one sees you at “class” when you study online. Save time – save money.
