72-hour kits are a must in everyone’s house. They may be a pain to put together, and you need to check them about once every three months, but if there is ever a disaster you will be thankful. You should include things like water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, and other things you feel will be important. You can find many lists online from public safety websites. One thing to consider placing in your kit is a few cigarettes. You hopefully do not smoke, but if there ever is a disaster, cigarettes will be hot commodities and you will be able to trade them for better items.
According to a recent report from the U.N., natural disasters cost the world nearly $200 billion, and close to 240,000 deaths were reported. That is outrageous, and to think most of these people simply needed to be more prepared. Although it was noted that most of last year’s economic costs and deaths were in China, think of years past like in New Orleans. It can and will happen to you eventually, so be prepared.
