Indiana Jones 101

Indiana Jones | Online ClassesSo, at the movies last night I saw the new teaser for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I was raised in the golden age of Spielberg and Lucas. So, needless to say, as soon as they started playing the now iconic John Williams score, I was signed, sealed, and delivered. My brain automatically resolved to be one of those fan boys decked out with fedora and whip on opening night. (Don’t diss or I’ll have to display my whip skills, and you don’t want that.) The movie that followed the trailer, Jumper, was lame, eclipsed by the coolness of the Indy teaser. (The only people having any fun were the twelve-year-old boys behind me.)

Riding this wave of euphoria, I determined that I would write today on something related to the legendary archaeologist/adventurer/one-man army, as I can scarcely think of anything else. Luckily for me, Indy is a “part-time” college professor. I write about education and careers. Bam! I’ve got an article.

What kind of education would it take to be Indiana Jones? To say the man has a diverse skill set is an understatement. He’s not just an archaeologist and a linguist, but he’s also not just a soldier of fortune. If some college were to create an Indiana Jones major, what would it look like? For those who want to be Indiana Jones (myself included), the following courses are currently offered at universities nationwide:

Nazi Germany
Introduction to Hittite
Self-Defense: Boxing
Old Egyptian Texts
Horse Management
Firearms Safety
Christianity and the Roman Empire
Leadership and Military Science

So, future Indies, good luck to you in your quest! And I’ll see you in line on opening night.

Go, Indie! And he must have had to know about Paleantology and Anthropology as well. What a degree that would be, huh?
