A medical biller is someone that submits claims to health insurance companies or the U.S. government in order to receive payment for medical services on behalf of a doctor or other licensed health care professional. Medical billers and coders are extremely important because they keep everything running smoothly. They are responsible for knowing when a patient received medical care, having the claim coded, billed, and then processed.
Medical billers and coders can work in doctor's offices, hospitals, and clinics plus many work from the convenience of their own home. Typically, jobs are Monday through Friday during normal business hours so individuals can have a life outside of the office.
But in order to be successful in this great career, individuals need to receive training on basic coding definitions and how to apply those codes to medical documentation. Then after they graduate they should take the certification test. Currently, billers and coders aren't required to be certified but the U.S. government plans on requiring all coders to become certified. Plus, many employers will only hirecertified coders, so in order to get the best jobs certification is necessary.
