ESL Programs Available Through Universities and Colleges 

Colleges have some excellent ESL teaching programs available. All states require a teaching degree and license to teach ESL courses in a public school to school children. There are excellent bachelor's degree programs (4 years) and master's degree programs available in the ESL teaching field.

ESL Teachers Wages

Most employers like ESL teachers to have at least a bachelor's degree in fields like English, teaching, or another language. Some colleges actually offer Master's degrees in ESL teaching. The average wages for ESL teachers in the United States in 2008 were about $23.00 per hour. Many ESL teachers work part-time and in the evenings when working adults can take classes. The highest 10 percent of ESL teachers made over $35.00 per hour, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook.

ESL Teaching Careers Outlook

The job outlook for ESL teachers is excellent as more and more immigrants come to the United States and need training in the English language. The need for ESL teachers also comes from employers who need skilled workers at all levels who are able to speak, read, and understand English. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the need for ESL teachers will create up to a 15 percent increase in job growth in this career field through 2018. However, the need for ESL teachers is dependent on the economy and federal funding. When the economy is good and employers are having a hard time finding workers, the need for ESL teachers increases. When the economy is poor and federal budgets for adult education are cut, the need for ESL teachers decreases. Job prospects will be best in states with the greatest numbers of incoming immigrants including California, New York, and Florida.
