10 Best Free iPhone Apps for Online College Students

If you think about it, we’re all online college students. I took a class one semester where I never saw my professor. Not once. It was awesome. I thought things couldn’t get any better. And then there was the iPhone. Now students can get their books, homework and test scores on their iPhones from anywhere on Earth. Which are the best for college students? Here are our 10 favorites.

Need to get some reading done for a class? This app is a perfect for students who all have a lot of reading to do. This app gives you instant access to more than 100,000 books, and many of them are free to download. Access to textbooks, how-to’s, manuals, classic works and modern literature is available instantly, and most of them for free.

Where

The only thing that’s bad about the Where app is that people don’t get that it’s called “Where”. “Remember the app that gives you the locations of all the closest restaurants, coffee shops and stores?”

“On my iPhone. The app that shows which local gas station has the cheapest gas and gives me local news and weather.”

Wikipedia Mobile

Wikipedia is my absolute favorite Web site. Wikimedia’s native app makes it even better. Whenever there is anything that I don’t understand or am unfamiliar with, I find the answer in second’s with Wikipedia. Whether it’s the Krebs Cycle or the definition of pusillanimous, Wikipedia has you covered.

Google Mobile

In the same vein as Wikipedia, the Google Mobile app offers a wealth of instant information at your fingertips. Technically the tip of your tongue.
All you have to do is say a word, like “mitochondria” or “hypotenuse” and Google Mobile will bring you the latest videos, scholarly articles and information that you need to make sense of your situation. Rather relax than study? It’ll respond to any other query you might have from “local sports bars” to whatever else your mind can concoct. Google will soon enough control our minds.

Voice Memos

This is simply the best voice recorder out there. Make notes, record lectures and then transfer all of the audio onto your computer for later use. One of the best all-around iPhone apps. This comes standard with iPhones, so you won’t have to look too hard for it.

GoWalla

GoWalla is a game, of sorts. It’s really a way of combining Facebook, Twitter and Geo Scavenger Hunts with actual socializing and real people. This isn’t a study app, but it’s a great way to meet new people, find new places and unwind from the school week. In larger metropolitan areas, and college towns, you’ll be surprised to see how many people are using it.

Blackboard

Thousands of colleges, universities, high schools, middle schools, academies and other institutions are using Blackboard, an online educational service that helps students collaborate, puts assignments and tests online, and allows instant access to grades. This is a must-have app for anyone who has to use Blackboard at school.

This is a great app for Art nerds or anyone in a humanities class. It’s an even better app for anyone trying to impress a girl pursuing a degree in humanities or art. It gives you instant and unlimited access to all the art inside the greatest collection of ancient and classic art in the world. Most girls today care more about Jersey Shore and Twilight than Caravaggio or Rembrandt, but, trust me, the girls that care more about the second half of that sentence are the ones worth talking to.

Evernote

Evernote is the one app out of all of these that you absolutely need. Their tagline is “Remember Everything” and their app does exactly that. Evernote keeps track of everything you want to remember, from pictures you take on the phone to notes you type yourself. It converts the print in scans and photos to readable and searchable texts. Scan tickets, book notes, phone numbers or whatever with the built in camera and never forget them ever. It will change your life.
